Hillnote — a place to think

Why Hillnote?

Hillnote is built for your most creative work.

Hillnote began with a simple belief: that something better was possible. The tools we used every day were good, but we kept picturing a workspace that felt more like home — where your ideas, your notes, and your AI all lived together in one calm place you truly owned.

Local AI turned out to be perfect for the everyday craft of writing — rephrasing a sentence, tightening a paragraph, looking something up — instant, private, and free, running right on your own machine. And when a task called for more, a frontier model was only a click away. The best of both, woven into the page instead of hidden in another tab.

Underneath it all, your work is just files — plain markdown on your own device, yours to read, keep, and carry anywhere. That openness became its own gift: the agents and tools you already love can read and write the very same files you do, over MCP, the built-in terminal, or the raw folder. Your workspace stays portable, and stays yours.

We built Hillnote for the work that compounds — a place to think that grows richer the longer you use it and travels with you everywhere. A home for everything you make, built so your best, most creative work has room to happen.

Where does your work live?

When did you last think about your files? Like really think about them. Your work, your thoughts, your ideas — they all live in those files. But right now, those files live in someone else's cloud, whether you wanted that or not. The cloud isn't a choice anymore — it's the default, and it's forced on you. If you forget to pay a subscription, would you still have access to your own work?

And now there's a second lock-in. AI wants to work with your notes — but it can't just read them. It needs an MCP server, an API, some bridge — some crutch — to reach in. None of that is really necessary. A model given raw files in open formats can work on them directly. What it needs isn't a bridge — it's access.

Your files should be yours — on your machine, in formats every tool can read. The cloud should be a choice you make, not a condition you're stuck with.

Hillnote is a local-first markdown editor that saves your notes in open, AI-ready formats — with all the context a model needs to work alongside you. A local LLM handles your quick thinking; sync is there when you reach for it. No paywall, no account, no lock-in.

Hillnote is just a great place to think — especially when that thinking needs to take shape.

A quick note while I refill my mug

Thank you so much for your interest in Hillnote and for your support. I believe in 2 core ideas that will shape the future of work: local AI will play huge role in specialized quick thinking and that markdown is going to be the future execution standard. This is one way I see how.

If there's anything you'd like to add, contribute or suggest please do reach out.

I hope Hillnote helps you create something wonderful!
